About Us

About the ECS Parent Community Organization
The Parent Community Organization was founded in the summer of 2008, shortly before the Environmental Charter School opened its doors to students in August 2008. All parents and guardians of current ECS students are automatically PCO members, as are all school employees and Board of Trustees members.

Mission
The mission of the ECS PCO, as a model of sound environmental practice, is to build and support positive relationships between families, staff, the Board, and the community.

Steering Committee
The Steering Committee consists of nine to thirteen seats, all of which are filled by parents of children currently enrolled as students at ECS. In accordance with the mission of the PCO, the Executive Committee shall: direct and plan the activities of the PCO in general; coordinate the specific efforts and activities of PCO committees and initiatives; facilitate communication within the school community (Board of Trustees, employees, and parents); and carry out all routine tasks necessary for the fulfillment of the PCO mission.

Parent Liaison Committee
Occasionally, channels of communication between parents and the school can seem to become blocked, leading parents to feel frustrated and uncertain as to what further steps to take. The PCO has a Parent Liaison Committee to assist ECS families in their communications with the school when needed.

PCO By-Laws
These Bylaws were approved at a meeting of the Steering Committee of the PCO on October 14, 2021.

History of the PCO
This article is from the September 2008 issue of the PCO newsletter, comPOST.

Newsletter Archive
comPOST was a bi-monthly newsletter which served as forum for communication among the PCO, ECS parents, ECS students and the school administration, as well as the surrounding communities, from 2008 to 2013. We provide this archive as a representation of the school and its strong community of support during its five inaugural years.
