Family Game Night RESCHEDULED

Game Night has been rescheduled for Friday, January 15, 5:30-8:00 pm due to the predicted weather.

ECS families are invited to play:

  •  Bingo
  •  Recess Games
Pizza will be served starting at 5:30 for $1.50/slice. Bring your favorite board or card game to teach to others. Donate a game/puzzle and earn extra raffle tickets in the game raffle!  Donate a new or gently used game for ages 5-12 for E-Day OR donate a new game for ages 2 through adult for the raffle.

ECS Holiday Marketplace

Brought to ECS by the Parent Community Organization, the Holiday Marketplace is an opportunity for students to shop for gifts for their loved ones during the first week of December. The Holiday Marketplace aims to provide a selection of fair trade, sustainable, affordable gifts. Learn more about some of our unique, interesting vendors and the products they offer:

Baskets of Cambodia was one of the first businesses to open up new markets for handcrafted items in Cambodia in 1996 after the war. With the help and dedication of talented Cambodians they have created a growing business that employs upwards of 400 people each year and has sold over a million products worldwide. They strive to produce eco-friendly products of original design that are labor friendly, and exhibit great craftsmanship and quality.

Building New Hope is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization based in Pittsburgh, PA and Granada, Nicaragua that has been supporting grassroots development projects in Central America since 1992. They sell the fairly traded organic coffee that has been part of the monthly coffee fundraiser at ECS since last year.

Divine Chocolate produces quality and affordable fair trade chocolate bars. Divine is a leading fair trade brand of chocolate and a pioneer in the world of socially responsible enterprise. The success of Divine means that cocoa farmers in West Africa have a secure source of fair trade income that continues to grow year on year.

Fair World Designs is part of the Fair Trade movement that began in Europe over 40 years ago. The Fair Trade purpose has been a mission full of hope to build small businesses of artisans to the point of securing sustainable incomes. Fair World Designs markets jewelry made from recycled paper beads.

HandCrafting Justice is a fair trade partnership working with women struggling for economic justice and independence in developing countries. They promote human dignity and justice by creating opportunities for economic and social transformation in part by marketing items the women make, such as candle holders, finger puppets, jewelry, coin purses, hand-made cards and much more. They also produce ECS's hand-embroidered polo shirts.

Mr. Ellie Pooh is an eco-friendly, innovative company that sells 100% handmade journals, stationery, crafts, scrapbook/photo albums and various grades of paper made of 75% elephant dung from Sri Lanka and 25% post-consumer paper. Ellie Pooh Paper is also sold at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.

SERRV is a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide. Through their work with community-based organizations in 36 countries, they create economic opportunity so these artisans and farmers can support their families and themselves. Their fair trade products include jewelry, ornaments, baskets, candles, and other food and gift items.

Ten Thousand Villages is an exceptional source for unique, handmade gifts, jewelry, home decor and personal accessories representing the diverse cultures of artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. One of the world's largest fair trade organizations, the company strives to improve the livelihood of tens of thousands of disadvantaged artisans in 38 countries. ECS is working with the local Squirrel Hill branch to bring a variety of gift items to our marketplace.

Women of the Cloud Forest, founded in 2001, produces beautiful jewelry in a never-ending range of colors, styles and patterns using sustainably harvested seeds from the dry tropical and wet cloud forests of Costa Rica. (You may have seen the rainforest beads on the lanyards used for volunteer name tags in the ECS office.) The women also sew bags, hand embroidered with colorful, accurate reproductions of North and Central American plants, birds, butterflies, and other animals.

Ice Cream Social - Friday, July 17
All ECS students and their families are invited to our 2nd annual Ice Cream Social on Friday, July 17 at 6:30 pm. Turtle Park, next to ECS. Please park responsibly - in the lot behind the school, or if street parking is required, not blocking any driveways, alleys or reserved parking spaces.

Potluck Picnic and Scavenger Hunt - Friday, August 14
Join ECS families for a picnic and a scavenger hunt through Frick Park on Friday, August 14 at 5:30 pm. Bring your nature hunting skills and a dish of your choice to share: side dish, appetizer, entree, dessert or drink. Bring your own plates, mugs and utensils for a waste-free picnic! Please park responsibly - in the lot behind the school, or if street parking is required, not blocking any driveways, alleys or reserved parking spaces.

Bring the whole family to get together with your child(ren)'s classmates at the playground this summer. Each 2009-2010 grade-level has two dates organized by the PCO.  Feel free to organize and publicize more get-togethers on your own.

Earth Nite at ECS: April 22

Join the Imagine Environmental Charter School in celebrating their first annual Earth Nite.  Community, families and students are invited to participate in a variety of earth-centered activities and to walk through a gallery of environmentally-themed work students created throughout the year.  A student performance showcasing the importance of environmental stewardship will kick off the event, and sessions from local partners including Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, Conservation Consultants, Inc., Mung Dynasty, Point Brugge Cafe and others will provide additional resources and activities for participants.

Earth Hour: March 28

As of March 12th, 1181 cities in 80 countries have signed on to participate in Earth Hour.  Pittsburgh is one of those cities and Imagine ECS has signed up as a participating organization! On March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, we will join hundreds of millions of people around the world in making a bold statement about climate change.  By turning off our lights for one hour, we will send a message that Americans care about this issue and stand with the rest of the world in finding solutions to the escalating climate crisis.  Join us!

Energy Week Co-Chairs
The staff at school is planning "Energy Week," with activities for the students to learn about energy conservation and alternative energy sources. It will probably happen in March. The staff is looking for someone to coordinate/oversee the week's activities. Would two parents be willing to step up as co-chairs for this week?

PR Volunteer
Is there a parent out there who has some experience dealing with the media? The school is planning and implementing several environmental initiatives which may be newsworthy. The staff needs help writing and sending press releases to attract the media.

Curriculum Night
Thursday, Jan. 29th 6:30
You are strongly encouraged to attend the first Imagine ECS Curriculum Night.  The staff will share strategies and activities that you can use at home to help your child succeed as a reader.  We will also discuss some new reading initiatives that will be implemented for all students.  The whole family is welcome to attend but there will be no childcare provided.

After-school Tutoring
The school is looking for after-school tutors. If you are interested or know of someone like a college student who may be interested in this part-time paid position, please contact Jon McCann at 412-247-7970.

Movie Night
Friday, Feb. 13th 7:00
Save the date for our first movie night of the school year, Feb 13th.  Movies will start around 7:00 and there will be three movie options. Kids (and adults too) are encouraged to wear pajamas and bring a sleeping bag or blanket.  This will be the first of 3 movie nights that will take place on the second Friday of each month through April. To volunteer to help organize and run Movie Night, please contact Angel Lehrian.

A bake sale will take place at this event - please consider volunteering to help run the table and/or to bake something to donate.  To volunteer for the bake sale, please contact Kerry Fogarty.

Adventures in Spanish by ABC Spanish Playtime™

Imagine Environmental Charter Schools presents
Adventures in Spanish by ABC Spanish Playtime™

Registration for Winter-Spring 2009 Adventures in Spanish is underway. Your child
can learn Spanish in the way that he or she learns best, through play. Spanish
Adventures is a 45-minute after school program that immerses children in a Spanish-
language environment where they are engaged, stimulated, and integrated naturally
and seamlessly into the world of Spanish through specially designed interactive play,
songs, and hands-on activities led by native and fluent speakers. Classes start
January 28th thru June 5th. Tuition for the 18-week class will be $110 per child and
$95 for each additional sibling. Classes for grades K-1 will be held on Wednesdays.
Classes for grades 2-3 will be held on Fridays.
